We like the rush. Fear sends an adreniline rush through our bodies and it's exciting, like nothing else. But we only enjoy the fear that still has that safety catch along with it (example: bungee jumping to get the rush of falling, but you know you still have a cord strapped to you, so in actuality you're still safe.) Fear without that safety catch is what people don't want to experience.

Surviving fearful events gives us an appreciation of life.
You could be in an actual fire or a bad accident and make it out alive. Or, you can pretend well enough to get the same feeling.

Well, I don't like those sort of things because I'm a Christian and it desensitizes you but, I think people watch them for the thrill.
