Because most Man Utd fans are glory hunters, and wouldnt even know where old Trafford is,let alone go to a game. Roy Keane blasted people in the corporate boxes calling them the Prawn Sandwich Brigade. Sir Alex once called United fans Tourists.
Its true that Man Utd have a huge world wide fanbase but so do most other premiership teams.
But I really hate Man utd with a vengence when they play at home the ref is so scared of the crowds and sir alex that they always get a penalty, and when they are drawing or losing the ref always seems to find at least 4/5 minutes of injury time, and they score.
And i've always noticed that everytime theres live football on the BBC its always Man Utd dont the bbc realise that there are other teams in the fa cup.

I think it's because of the size of the club. People adopt clubs that they know and hear about. Unfortunately for some smaller clubs, they don't get the same publicity. There will always be big fan bases away from the teams location for clubs that do well at the top level. Also, why are there more Man Utd fans than Man City fans? Because when they were children their parents said "Now you stay away from that Maine Road"!!

People always say that genuine Man U fans dont come from Manchester...when in fact 80% of Man u season ticket holders are from Manchester and Cheshire...this was stated on Talk sport a few weeks back

manchester united has the largest worldwide fanbase of any other sporting franchise.....thats why u have that impression. that is, the man utd fans in manchester are only a small proportion of man utds fanbase....on the other hand the few (poor) supporters man city has are all in manchester.....poor sods.
incidentally i'm form jamaica but i've been a man u fan since i was 4 yrs. old and started watching football - they were my dad's team and so they became mine.

I am a big Utd supporter and I come from Manchester. Why should they change their name when the ground is in a district of Manchester (ie Stretford).

This is a myth. if you go around the city there are more people wearing United stuff than City. It is just that 99% of CITY fans live in Manchester.

What i have noticed is that people who haven't got a clue about football support Man U because they WERE the biggest team. I have 2 friends who are guilty of this crime (both 16 so when they were deciding what team to support Man U were dominating). However a lot of people who don't know a thing about football are now starting to support Chelsea because now they are the big club.

what number Arsenal followers from London? Ditto Chelsea? Liverpool followers from Liverpool? shall we flow on... having a international fan base is considered as a stunning good element. except you're Manchester United.
