Meteroites. They cause craters on the earth too. It's just that we have an atmosphere and they are more likely to burn up rather than strike the earth. Since the moon, and mercury have no atmosphere, the meteor will not burn up and will most definately cause a crater. Mars has an atmosphere but it's not thick enough to burn up many meteors.

Comets, Asteroids, Meteors. These are always hitting planets and moons. Take our moon, for example, it has many more craters than we see on Earth. This is because our moon does not have an atmosphere like the Earth to help protect it, and so gets hit quite often.

These craters are basically caused by a collision of a smaller body (meteor) with the surface.
