Until I read this question, I never really thought of Valentine's day as being just a commercial, money-making scam. But now that I'm thinking about it, I think that it just may be.
I mean, ... what do people do on Valentine's day?.. Buy gifts, go out for dinner, maybe even watch a movie. But aren't those things that couples do all that time anyways? I would hope so... because you should let the person that you're with know that you love him/her everyday... and a nice dinner or a night out at the movies shouldn't be reserved for just one special day out of the year.
But for those who are often too busy or too broke to do the little things like buy flowers or treat their significant other to a nice dinner, I feel as though Valentine's day is absolutely necessary. It gives the ones who might've made a few too many mistakes for the last few monthes a chance to make things right and it offers some the opportunity to go all out and really make their partner feel really really special without being suspected of having done something wrong.

Thats the whole point of Valentines, for couples who love each other to show romantic jestures on a special day made for them. We do show each other all year round how much we love each other, but its still nice to have a 'special' day. I don't think its a money making scam at all.

It is only a commercial scam for those who bite into it too much!
I personally like the idea of showing love year round, including buying occasional sweets. But for those who keep it to sweets and other things that they would otherwise do, or give as a present, then they are not buying into the scam part.

Yes, I don't see why there needs to be a special day for it. It's totally pointless for couples who don't show each other any affection all year and then just get a card for each other just for the sake of it. I'd rather be spoilt at Christmas and on my birthday than Valentine's Day which is very commercialised. It's also a horrible day for singletons, I remember dreading it every year when I was single.

Its only a money making scam if you fall into the trap. You could make your own card, dinner at home, a romantic setting and have the whole day/evening to yourselves!!!! BUT if you buy all these querky items on the shelves, cards that cost a small fortune etc. then I think you have fallen into the trap. Good Luck

Not at all. No one says you have to buy anything... In fact, most of my guy friends would much rather get something homemade and simple, such as a poem or a handmade card, than something commercial or flashy.
Oh, and it's not a scam. Saint Valentine's day has been around for 400+ years. Look it up. :)

Yeah... but it's a really nice way of just letting your loved one know you're thinking about them... although a little sad for those without someone they love.
It'll be my first one this year in 6 years without anyone (unless I pluck the courage up to ask a guy at work out..... but I probably won't by then).
