The only way to quit is to actually want to quit. I mean that sincerely. If you are trying to quit cause you know its bad for you or someone is trying to make you, it will never work. You have to truly want to quit. After that, make a rule that you will never put a cigarette in your mouth again. That sounds like a joke but its not. If you bum a smoke or take a drag off someone else's, then you are back to smoking again. You should treat this the way that alcoholics do it at AA. One day at a time.
I'm telling you that you must never touch a cigarette or you will be smoking full time again soon. I don't care how bad a day you have had or if you plan on only 'smoking when I drink'.

I smoked from 13 years to 40. Stop cold turkey one day.
I used the gum as an aid.
Now, in hindsight, I really think that what made my quest to quit succesfull, was my brain.
I woke up every morning thinking of myself as an ex smoker, and not a person who was trying to quit.
Did the gum help? Not sure anymore.

Hi there -
Check out mytimetoquit.com, or Chantix.com. Chantix is a newly approved oral agent which helps smokers quit, as long as they are motivated. I believe it's around 20% more successful than Zyban.

I tried everything. Only one thing worked. That good ol' frigid bird known as COLD TURKEY! Sometimes in life you just got to suck it up and make a stand.
