D Piddy is right. A moonroof is glass, a sunroof is metal. Both can either tilt up, slide back, or both. The difference is that you can see through the moonroof when it is closed. Many also have a sliding cover on the inside, so that you can block out the hot sun, or keep people in taller vehicles from looking in.

A sunroof just tilts up creating a small opening.

A power sunroof is the same thing but is powered.

A moonroof actually opens all of the way because it slides into the roof of the car. These are almost always powered.

Used to be the difference between sliding back and whether they were glass or not dont know which was which but sunroof was first so I'm assuming that was a flip up style, where moonroof is one that slides back.

From what I have been told, a sunroof only goes up a few inches in the back but a moonroof actually retracts to give you the opening in the roof.

Many cars have both.
A sunroof slides back to open. A moonroof flips up at the rear.

if you can see thru it when closed, its a moonroof.

my sunroof tips up, and retracts, and is the same sheet metal as the rest of the car.

my old moonroof tips up, retracts, is tinted glass, and has a slide up cover to block the light if you want.

"Historically, sunroofs have been opaque and open to the air to allow the sun to shine directly into the vehicle, while moonroofs have generally been transparent or semi-transparent and designed to remain closed while allowing muted light to penetrate the vehicle."

Essentially the same thing, just a different part of the day.

when they were new
MOONROOF - transparent ( some opened some didn't ) - you could see the moon
SUNROOF - opaque panel that opened ( some slid some had to be removed )
now whatever the copywriter chooses
