turn signal and brake light use the same bulb, so this is how it works.
the turn signal switch has 2 positions for each rear side light. position 1 turns light on when turn signal is off and brake is on. position 2 turn light on when turn signal is on and has no connection to brake light switch. when the turn signal is on for a side that sides light is in position 2 while the other sides light stays in position 1.
when the turn signal switch goes bad it can effect any one to all of the positions.
the problem you described is a common turn signal switch problem.

Try your turn signals and hazards. Do they work? If so, then read on...

I am having the same problem with my 97 Lumina right now. I do not see any reason to believe that it is the turn signal switch, but I too have heard that they are VERY problematic in these cars. So *I* believe that it IS the turn signal switch, and I will confirm that theory tomorrow, so I will let you know.

Looking at a wiring diagram I discovered that the brake switch runs through the DRL module (daytime running lights), but if the middle brake light works then the DRL must be working properly too. I will know more later.

Note: The brake switch cannot be the problem, as the third light (middle top) works fine.

More to come.

Does your car have the headlight switch on the turn signal arm? Some cars have integrated all the lights thru the signal switch , so that may very well be the problem. But, it shouldn't affect the brake lights. That is a separate circuit, and there is a fuse in the panel, and a switch on the brake pedal arm. i would check all the bulbs back there first, and then jiggle the wires, and see if that does anything.

no(not the signal) is a switch behind the brake pedal.
You also have a burned bulb

It could be a short in your wiring or you may need to replace the bulbs....it should have nothing to do with you turn signal
