I was in the cut flower industry for many years, and the reality is the rose is in demand. The fact that the stem is longer, is more desirable, and the longer grades are in shorter supply. When they grow, there is an avg size, with a smaller % growing longer stems.
Now if you mean as in buying rose bushes, it's similar, related to demand, and the quest for everyone's ideal rose. Hybridizers get top dollar for finding that most desirable form, as the majority are just average. Hope that helped.

In order to get long stemmed roses and even the carnations you buy in the store, the growers have to keep pinching off most of the other buds and shoots to get all the strength and nutrients into the flowers they are going to harvest, so they are losing a big part of the plant This means less flowers per plant which equals more money per flower.

You are not just buying the rose flower, but a large portion of the rose bush.

just more labor involved, more packaging, shipping, everything. the whole stem has to look good, versus just a smaller area.

sure, one stem gets an "awwww"....a dozen makes a statement. remember the color code for roses; yellow=friendship, red=passionate love....check with your florist for pink & white...

best,

It's a marketing thing?...
From a gal's perspective... a single flower is sufficient to make us go, "awwww". It's not the price, it is the thought.

They are more difficult to grow, take more time to grow and use up much more space to grow.
