Yes and no, Cheap radar detectors do not have a fast enough over sampling to catch what is called "instant on" radar. The best radar detector on the market is the valentine 1. Some are right when they say that it wont catch it in time, that is true if you are the only car on the road, if you have a good radar detector as the cop clocks the vehicle's before you it will set off your radar detector. Also true is the laws, don't have one if its against the law they have advanced equipment to tell if you have one. They are not fool proof but a good one will pay for itself if it works just one time. So Get a good one read reviews and not just the reviews on the box! I would recommend Valentine One

Unless you really want to spend some big money on proven radar detector (upwards of $500 to 1,000) you are wasting your money. Police and other law enforcement agencies have other means than radar to catch speeders. Some jurisdictions use airplanes, and also use the pacing maneuver where they get behind a car and tell the speed by how fast the police car is driving. Oklahoma and Arkansas have the technology of using what they refer to as radar detector detectors. I am a professional driver and my company uses one of these devices to make sure we as drivers are not using them in company equipment. So far the company has been over 95% successful in catching often hidden detectors. Also the police have a box on the ticket that they can check if a radar detector is present during the stop. With the risk of higher insurance premiums and points on the license I wouldn't personally chance it.

Waste of money. Many cops now have something called a VG2. It is a radar detector scanner. Basically it scans for the signals put out by the radar detector. So while you drive down the road scanning for thier radar they are scanning for your detector.
The fine for having a radar detector is way more than the fine for speeding.

The Problem with a Radar Detector is that it usually 1st goes off when the Cop pulls his trigger on HIS Radar Gun. This means that at the same time you know that there is a Cop with a Radar Gun pointing his Gun at your car is the SAME TIME that your Radar Detector goes off. The result is that your Radar Detector went off; BUT you STILL get a Ticket ! ! !

I had one and it did save me a couple speeding tickets, the drawback is when you start getting alarms but don't see the cop, then you start to question the reliability and become paranoid. Also many cops have radars now that have "instant on", which basically means your detector will not detect them until they have already clocked you. I would suggest adjusting your speed to 5-6 miles over the limit and cruise, most cops won't stop you unless you are doing 8-10 over.

You are wasting money--by the time the radar detector goes off, the cop already has nailed you.

Well, first, you shouldn't speed. It's dangerous to you and everyone else on the road. Just had to insert my opinion.
Second, if it's illegal in your state then you could get a hefty fine if caught.
Third, they only work if the police has his radar on. A lot of times the police will not turn it on until they see you speeding and then it's too late.
Hope that helps.

Buy one if u want BUT be forewarned that most of them will be set off by AIRLINE GUIDANCE TRANSMITTERS (No fooling, there is one of these West of Winslow AZ about 5 miles and it is on the North side of the interstate, it is a white cone about 40' tall and sets off most radar detectors) they will be set off by AUTOMATIC DOOR OPENERS, RAILROAD RADAR SPEED CHECKERS, and WILL NOT BE SET OFF BY PHOTO RADAR AS THEY USE SPEED SENSORS IN THE ASPHALT!
SLOW DOWN AND LIVE.

In most cases they do work but if you are just flat out hauling @SS then no they will go off just as the cop is nailing you.Prevention to speeding would be to visit a funeral home when a family of 5 is laid out waiting for their loved ones to come say their final good byes because a idiot that had a need for speed hit their car and killed them.
