You should have ONE anti-virus, ONE firewall, ONE spam filter, and several spyware filters. The anti-spyware will work with each other, but the other elements may see the competing software as an "infection."

Yes! Also, use a firewall that blocks outbound traffic as well as inbound traffic, Windows XP firewall only blocks inbound traffic. Along with spyware(more than 1), also recommend a rootkit revealer(detects changes in your software hive,ie: the very core of your computer).
