I know that i can choose different stocks within a mutal fund. This are stocks that have been pre picked at the mutal fund.

This not stupid.( legally,for your self,yes,For others.no ) You can buy stocks for your self 6.99-9.99 at alot of low cost brokers, (yahoo finance,check out all the ads. ) It may cost you more up front,BUT if you are good you will come out ahead.You might check out ETF's ( Exchange traded funds ) They trade like stocks,but you can buy or sell them at any time. (unlike M.F.'s ) M.Fd managers are the most over paid people out there. To learn more about ETF's,look at yahoo"s finance home page scroll down to ETF's.

You can, it's called an investment "trust", and it's kinda like starting your own business, a process full of formalities. Instead of selling shares of a business, you would then be able to sell shares of the portfolio holding that you manage.

What you're talking about is establishing a brokerage account - and you can do that at Vanguard - with low fees.

Just check with them - online or elsewhere and they'll tell you how to do it.
