A god is generally an omniscient (all powerful) being who exists as an entity which is, and always was, separate from the human realm..

.. a spirit is either the "soul" of a deceased person, or the essence of a specific aspect of human experience or nature.

In other words ... a god was never a person ... and a spirit reflects a person or a specific part of something or someone.

I would say that a God refers to something higher than humans, whereas a spirit isn't necessarily so.

A God is someone/something that controls something (eg. god of lightening). A spirit is a 'ghost' that talks to you.
