You do nice things because you will get something out of it. Its in your best interest to be nice. whether its innate or not doesn't really matter... It will more than likely be beneficial. That is really the only valid reason. be nice because it will help you out in the long run.
Rather than thinking of it as nice and mean, think right and wrong, and good and bad. It will most likely lead you to a better understanding of things.
