the british board of film censors, U is universal ie; suitable for all , A is adult ie;children under 16 had to be accompanied by an adult, X forbidden to under 16s. this was changed in 1970 to AA forbidden to under 14s, X forbidden to under 18s.

In the states it was The Hayes code of conduct that controlled the movies standards .
