I think it's because they aren't able to flail their arms and legs around that much. When my daughter was about 4 months old, we stopped swaddling her at bedtime. She has never slept on her back at night since then. Occasionally during her naps, she will doze off on her back, then she moves her arms and wakes herself up crying. So I would have to say it's because it lessens the flailing.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!
1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.
2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.
The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.
After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net
Ohhh..and Good Luck!

I think it is because f the comfort of being in a balled up position, when laying on thier backs they tend to have a reflex where they jump and flail there legs and arms...Also I think it more comfortable after drinking warm milk, think about drinking a warm cup of tea and laying directly on your back right after... I would feel uncomfortable...My Daughter slept on her stomach after 1 week, i was always up watching her, if it was at night, I layed her on her side with a small blanket at the small of her back, but laying her on her back never worked she remained up.

I think when the babies are on their timmies it mimmiks the fetal position. Who does not like sleeping in the fetal position. SIDS I know I know. At night I put my baby girl on her back and she does not sleep comfortably. During the day when I am awake to look over her I let her sleep on her belly. I pray and get my house work done.

If you want to put your baby to sleep in 20 seconds you must get the "Instant Baby Sleep" MP3 sound track. Here is their official web-site: http://www.instantbabysleep.net
The sound track gently produces energy over the full human hearing spectrum with an embedded pulse that gently eases the brain to the Alpha state well known for drowsiness and sleep induction.

I have never put my baby on his stomach to sleep, it is a very dangerous thing to do. The most comfortable position for a baby is lying on their side. They are not on their stomach's in the womb, they are in a fetal position. But good luck with that anyways.

Yes...you are right, at least for my baby she could not sleep for more than 20mins on her back, coz she would flail her arms and wake herself up. She didnt like to be swaddled either. So i resulted to putting her to sleep on her back...and it worked, she slept longer.

Honestly its probably more comfortable. I love sleeping on my stomach, however after I would wake up and move I would have back pain for the rest of the day.

I think they feel more secure. When they roll over into this position on their own you can let them sleep like this. Never put a baby to sleep on their tummies.

I think it is because it seems like a more natural position curled up in a ball. Kind of like being in the womb still.
