I'm pretty sure Dallas is more expensive. I live in Austin right now as a student. The apartments I live in now are student oriented and I pay 499/month for my room, have one roommate in a two bedroom apartment, we each have our own bathroom and get cable internet and water included in our rent. The apartments are pretty nice but they are going to raise the rent next year. When I did my apartment hunting I found most one bedroom apartments cost at least 500/month for a decent one and they did not include any utilities. So, I am pretty sure Dallas is more expensive for what you get.

The others confirm that buying houses is slightly more expensive, but I believe that rents are slightly more expensive in Austin. But if you took into consideration the value of living in Austin compared to living in Dallas, then the difference is astronaumical. Austin is the best deal!

According to Salary.com, the cost of living in Dallas is 0.7% higher in Dallas than in Austin.

However, according to about.com (http://austin.about.com/od/localstatistics/a/costofliving_3.htm ), the median home price in Austin/Round Rock is $197,000, while the median home price in Dallas is $177,000. So, by this resource, the median home price in Austin is 11% greater than that of Dallas.

Based on the statistics describing the aggregate data in my limited research, I would suggest that while housing prices in Austin/Round Rock are more expensive than those in Dallas, other factors make living in Austin slightly less expensive than living in Dallas.

You can't ask such a wide open question. What part of town are you talking about. Are you talking a studio, one bed, two bed? give us a clue and we might be able to provide you a realistic answer, not an "I think" or "I am pretty sure".
