Leather Couch Peeling

Peeling on leather can be caused by many things. Depending on how old the leather is it could be a manufacturing fault. Sometimes the finish has not been applied properly and can begin to peel off.

Sometimes products that have been used to clean leather can cause peeling on the surface, usually this has been caused by things like baby wipes, silicones (furniture polish) or the wrong cleaning solutions (washing up liquid or powder).

Technicians see this sort of damage every day. It is best to call a leather technician to establish what has caused this problem. In most cases he would be able to fix it. It is not something you can do yourself but it does need repairing

The leather on a sofa is made up of a couple of layers of "split leather" that is glued together. The glue fails and the leather flakes off. You somhow need to make the leather itself more pliable as a preventitive measure.

Ordinary mineral oil from a drug store will soften leather on a counch. Around a bad spot apply the oil, the heat with warm air from a blow dryer.

Give the cushions a couple good coats of mineral oil, letting it soak in there, for a day or two, then wipe off and use normally.

Every so often give the couch a mineral oil treatment, it will keep it pliable.
