Look in a paper

To find a job in Calgary:

Walk into a business and tell them you are willing to show up for work tomorrow.

To find a place to live in Calgary:

1. Have a friend here who will tolerate you sleeping on his/her couch for at least a month or more.
2. Show up in this city with a minimum of $1500 to cover the damage deposit and first month rent.
3. Buy both major papers everyday and investigate EVERYTHING you can afford
4. Have a cell phone to receive calls from landlords
5. Do not plan on doing anything after work other than looking for a place until you find one

There is all kinds of work here and you can expect to make more than twice the wages you'll make in the eastern provinces. That said you can also expect to pay twice as much or more to live here. Rental vacancy rates have been under 1% for well over a year now and it's getting worse. Condos under a quarter of a million dollars are not available. Houses under $350-400 Grand are not available.

Be very careful before you pack up on a whim and come here. The stories you are hearing about how much work here is true. That said, the stories about people having a job but being stuck in the homeless shelter are just as true. Good luck.

There are jobs everywhere - depending on what you want/are qualified to do.

However, as already said, many of the jobs are service industry. It seems like almost every store and restaurant in town are hiring right now, and have been for a while. Starting wages are good for that type of work - some places are starting at more than $10 an hour - but not nearly high enough to cover the high cost of living here.
