Paper goes up all the time because it takes a lot of trees to make paper. My newspaper went up due to "the rising cost of paper".They are also priced higher so places like amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Books-A-Million can cut them 40% and still make a profit.

I've heard a few people say this recently, but I can't say that I've found most books to be any more expensive than usual. This might be because I tend to buy in specific genres and topics and I haven't seen much variance in those prices.

There are some really good used bookstores out there (depends on your area), and a lot of times you can find something in great condition for way less than list. There are also places that sell remainder books (brand new books that big stores can't sell). If you live anywhere near these places, I'd suggest going there:
(Used book store) http://www.wonderbk.com/
(Remainders) http://www.gvbookfair.com/

Also, places like Books-A-Million and Barnes and Noble have membership cards that offer 10% discounts (all the time) and frequent coupons and members-only sale prices. You have to pay for the memberships, but if you buy a lot of books (or coffee while browsing the stores) it is worth it.

Amazon has incentives like free shipping on certain orders, 30% off most hardback book titles (not all), and 4-for-3 deals.

So what I'm trying to say, I suppose, is that even if books seem expensive, there are ways to get the same story for less - and if the price is still daunting, there's always the library!

Because the "used book market" steals a lot of the would-be profits from the publishers. They have to jack up the original prices in order to turn a decent profit.
