I live in Southern Indiana and have one 8 year-old son. What would be the going rate for babysitters? I've never had to hire a babysitter before, so I want to make sure I'm paying fairly.

Two prospective babysitters are college Students and one is a 14 year old. Thanks for all your help!!

Just a little extra info....as an FYI to the person who answered don't use a babysitter:

I am a single mother living 30 miles away from my closest family. Unfortunately, family isn't an option right now, but that is why I never had to hire a baby sitter before. I would rather not have to, but I can't take him with me and I need to go to this meeting. The people I am looking at are college students who work part-time in my office, so I know them. The other is a girl who my daycare sitter recommended.

Additional info.....I would be bringing my son to the college students apartment and he would be there around 3 hours.

Well, I am thinking either a flat rate, depending on how long you are out for. $30.00 for 3 hours should be good. Or $10/h is good too

Well, I'm in CT and everything cost more here the average baby sitter here makes anywhere from 10-12 $ per hr + tip...but there perhaps...7-8 $ an hour...not less then 6.00. I would say if your hiring the college student you will have to pay more then the teenager. I baby sit when I was in college too. I got about 15.00 per hour but I was doing lots of cleaning and cooking too...It also depends on the amount of time you will need a sitter before and if your child is well behaved and won't be too much for the sitter then u can charge less. If you trust and like the teenager then give her a whirl. If he/she is a mature teenager it could work out well. Good LUCK!

*** try bringing your child to the college students place for a trial period...is it a college dorm room...that would concern me...that might have national lampoon's written all over it! Give it a trial at like 10 an hour and see how your child likes the sitter and see if he is ok with being away from your home.**** or bring your child here and he/she can play in our home, we have all kinds of kids stuff here and NO KIDDOS! :( not yet...it's a great community though) I'm kidding, tough situation...good luck!

It is hard I babysat for years when I was younger some people were very generous some were clueless I relay think a good idea is to ask them their rates. I have not babysat in years but when I did I charged 2.50 an hour for one child then a dollar for each addition child I felt really lucky when people would pay 5 or more an hour. This was 10 years ago so it is kinda like my mom telling me she got 50 cents an hour but I myself would think that for now a days 6-7 dollars an hour would be sufficient.

Hire the babysitter, but if it's a day time thing, you can hire the 14 years old, providing that she's mature enough to watch your child.

Pay rate.. .. all day- 5-8 hours..... $35--$40.
Evening, nite rate...all nite, late night $50-70.

In any event, around $5.00 per hour. Expect to pay more if you hire the college student.

i'm in Jacksonville and that i think of $10 continues to be surely the going fee. although, it actual relies upon on the possibility of your clientèle and how long you have worked for them. don't be afraid to invite for a advance in case you have been with them for a whilst.
