If people think that Americans are arrogant, spoiled, uneducated brats, then last night watching Landon refuse to talk to the Spanish reporter confirmed it for them. Univision even said on the air how ill-mannered Landon was. All he wanted to do was try and congratulate him. Who knows, talking to Univision could of been a good thing to promote the MLS??? Then when he decided to talk to the US reporters, he just tries to bash the Mexicans by saying he tries to shake their hands, but they won't shake his. Come on DUDE, you think you are perfect????? If he plans to play with Beckham, he had better learn some class. The MLS needs good people to market their product. Not overrated brats who can't show up for the big games (WC '06). He went to Europe and couldn't get respect. So for that he has to disrespect every other country? Open your eyes Landon!

Thanks.

You are onpoint on everything you have to say. I cannot stand Donovan. I was surprised that he actually converted on a breakaway (well after missing chances and giving up possession endlessly...he better). I have no idea why he thinks he's a superstar. He's a big fish in a very small pond. I look at Americans that I am proud of and I think of Claudio Reyna, John O'Brien, DaMarcus Beasley, Brian McBride, Oguchi Onewyu and other successful Americans that struggled to succeed in the intense European market.

None of those players cried and gave up on a journey. So what if he gets a top salary in the MLS...if you are so good, I want to see you play in Europe for more than a month. Then I will allow for you to come back.

It was an intense game with many great stars (most on the Mexican team), but for the most part I am proud of my Americans even though they got outplayed. However, I am not proud of Donovan.

It's all part of the marketing package. The MLS will soon become like WWF and NASCAR. Gauranteed. Every TV sports product needs villains and heroes. Although what happened last night with Donovan goes beyond this idea (since there's bad blood with him and the entire mexican country), I do feel that his ongoing petulance will be embraced by more than a handful of "redneck fans". What makes it even worse is that he speaks fluent spanish and is quite versed with mexican culture. He simply hates mexican soccer players and anything to to do with them. This facet of his character will surely be exploited and probably even commercialized by the sports media in the following season when Beckham arrives.

What the MLS is missing (not just the talent) is a dramatic element that will draw viewers away from baseball in the summer. The team rivalries are are in their infancy, so it seems likely that TV producers will try to find a rivalry on a more immediate platform. ex: Larry Bird and Magic Johnson when the NBA was just starting to blossom; Dennis Rodman and Karl Malone; Joe Namath and the Baltimore Colts when the SuperBowl was just starting out.

NASCAR and the WWF tap into the TV market not because they're great sports as much as the fact that there's a dramatic element despite the sport.

Donovan, at his young age, will surely enjoy a long colorful career in the MLS as a foil against all other uprighteous players, or heroes.

As far as him being an a---h---. That's what he's good at, and no higher power will want this to change his attitude as long as it brings in publiciity to American soccer and the MLS.

PS He isn't disrespecting other countries at this point, just Mexico, his arch rivals.

Unbelievable. I think Donovan is overrated and petulant, and I wish he had stayed in Europe. At the same time I appreciate him for what he offers and what he has done for the U.S.: he does have skill and speed, and he used both last night when he assisted on the first goal and scored the second. He has typically done well for the U.S. (he is, after all, now the career leader for the USMNT for assists) and despite his flop in the W.C. (the whole team flopped, Arena included) he remains a key player and a leader. I'm no Donovan lover in particular, but come on, you guys are speaking as if he has no business on the pitch.

Don't forget also that the Mexicans forgot to put their diapers on too--they didn't exchange jerseys or even shake the hands of the U.S. players after they lost--yet again without even opening their account. Donovan deserves to be held to a higher standard because he is the purported leader of the team, but that doesn't mean unwarranted criticism should go unchallenged.
