Networking the two computers together should be fairly easy. If you don't have a network already, purchase a crossover cable.

I'm sure somebody can offer you more detail on this - I managed it with a mix of web searches and checking the help files on my computers.

Yes. Get an external usb hard drive case. You can hook the hard drive to your desktop that way.
