"It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it."

I like it.
I think it means that one must have detachment and objectivity.

And you?

i agree ,,, and yes i think one would need a certain level of detachment and objectivity to be able to do that,,,,,, to me it means you are able to stand back and consider issues/idea,, you dont have to get defensive or even form an opinion, just view the thought presented or felt

I think if you can entertain the thought, you can accept it, you just choose not to. Is this the mark of an eductated man, or a stubborn man, or an uncertain man?

After all, if you enjoy the entertainment of a musician, don't you have to accept his song, even a little? Otherwise, how would you find it entertaining? If it was merely the combination of hearing music, and being entertained, then any thought, no matter how empty or meaningful, would entertain you, without, of course, having to subscribe and believe in it.

I like this.

I don't know if I'd use the word "educated", though. Perhaps "intelligent" is a better choice. However, in Aristotle's time, the two things were one in the same, so maybe it doesn't matter in that context.

I think it means that one is able to think about something and objectively weigh its pros and cons. One can understand the other side, even see their point of view, while still disagreeing with them. Many people are not capable of doing that.

Sounds like an imagination. To start with a "what if" or "suppose this is so" and then continue to think hypothetically.
I can see where you could say, objectivity... But I think it's more about the detachment to one's preconceptions.

Only a detached mind could start with a theory and weigh all of the possibilities to find truth.

I like it very much.

For instance, I am not a fan of the "big bang theory", but I can read about it without suddenly becoming a believer. But, I also think it's the mark of an educated mind to be open enough to change one's mind and to grow.

As long as "educated" in the sentence does not necessarily mean that one went to school but that it pertains to a higher mind set, then I too like and entertain it.

This means i can expand the universe of other meanings for others without alter my personal understanding of the question. It's the same discribing something without personal position, evaluate and trying to find out its real function.

I do not agree nor desagree. Hehehe :-)

I think if we all listened to this there would be no war!

I think it means that there is no reason why an intelligent person can't respect the views of another person. It dosn't mean you have to agree but be aware of its exsistence.

It could also mean that we should make up our own minds.

I think he means it is a sign of intelligence to be able to do so. A less intelligent person would rapidly reject a thought it cannot accept. Smart guy, isn't he? Just love him!

I think it means you can consider an idea and criticize it and discuss and even think that the idea is good without actually having to accept it as one fit for you.
I like it. it shows hot centered and balance his personality was and how much acceptance for other people's thought he had.
