I agree that its not number 2, I would think maybe 6, 7, 8, or 9. I keep getting emailed by a hockey fan telling me that it is number 2 and I am not sure how this thought can be justified so I wanted to get some other hockey fan opinions.

I am a proud and die hard hockey fan and I know for a fact that there is no way hockey is #2. First would be soccer than probably basketball. There aren't as many hockey teams as there are soccer or basketball teams in the Olympics.

I wish it was number 2 but I have to think it's not, I know for a fact that more people watched the Curling Championships a couple years ago then the Stanley Cup, which personally as a giant hockey fan I fine extremely depressing. I know that Curling isn't more popular, and hockey may be the second most played sport, but it's definitely not the 2nd most popular.

and the sport keeps growing and growing and to cheezy saying american football #2 comon its not big anywhere else but the US i know you don't like hockey but get real.

hockey is the 2nd biggest sport in the world behind Football (soccer) yes Hockey is ranked maybe 6th in the US, and ranked pretty low in England behind football (soccer) rugby even darts but world wide its getting bigger and bigger Pakistan is playing Egypt is playing and more and more coutries are inbrasing this sport.

Basketball isnt nearly is big as hockey Lawn Bowling is being played more around the world thewn all 3 major league sport in the US american football, baseball, and basketball. even with baseball losing popularity in the US its self its getting bigger around the world like in asia and its been around in Porto Rico, Dominican, Cuba, Venazela and etc... trust me its the 2nd most played sport in the world. no other sport is that big besides your Football (soccer) world wide.

and i didnt even post anything to do with the women's part of this game and Basketball has nothing on hockey im not saying its not big around the world but its not in the top 5 in the world to hockey.

IT'S THE 2ND MOST PLAYED SPORT IN THE WORLD.

Soccer is obviously first, but Basketball or Baseball is second not Hockey. I'd like Hockey to be that popular but it's not.

Basketball and baseball both have leagues throughout the world just like soccer and hockey.

American Football is at the top of US ratings with 34%. Hockey is at 3% viewership in the US. This is below Auto Racing and Soccer at 4%.

No, not really. Try volleyball, basketball, table tennis, tennis, and soccer. They are all MUCH more popular, world-wide, than hockey. They are more popular than American football, too.

The link below shows some interesting stats, but I have a more practical reason for this: hockey is expensive. So is American football. These other sports, all you need is a ball and a net to play. In countries that are impoverished, and most are, these sports are going to be the most successful. And they are! Thousands of leagues exists for them all, world-wide.

You can't forget F1 racing and its worldwide TV audience, which at times is greater than soccer. But if you are going by people participating, I would say soccer is first and basketball is second. Being Canadian, hockey is first here and politics second, lol

I'd like to think so, yes, after soccer, but when saying the world's most popular sport, I'd think basketball is reaching lots of places worldwide, tennis has many fans and golf, too. Hockey is quite potent in many world markets, but I just don't think it is No. 2.
