a friend of mine is pregnant and she's had two ultrasounds 3 wks apart, both times the docs said she was 8 wks pregnant. she's lost 30 lbs since she conceived, and eats constantly. she didn't know she was preggers at first and drank & smoked a lot & did some bad drugs, and she was bulimic.
could she have hurt her baby already? why would they think she was 8 wks preg the second time? (btw- she fig. out that she had to have conceived 8 wks prior to the first ultrasound)

Nobody on a site like this can give a sure answer, and sometimes for one reason or another something could cause some "issue" with the ultrasound; but - yes - it is entirely possible that the fetus stopped developing at 8 weeks.

All healthy fetuses develop at the same rate in the beginning, so if there was an accurate measurement of her fetus and it showed a fetus was looked much smaller than it should there's a chance it stopped growing.

Another side to it, though, is if this is someone who has used drugs, smoked a lot, drank a lot and was bulemic this is a person who isn't particularly "on top of things" to say the least. There's a good chance she didn't listen or understand exactly what it was she was hearing or that someone had "8 weeks on a file somewhere" and someone else, like the ultrasound technician, went with that. In other words, a miscommunication that your friend wasn't quick enough to pick up on.

A high number of early pregnancies end in miscarriage even with the mother-to-be, and there's a chance your friend already killed her developing fetus with her behavior; and if either of these is the situation the fetus died and is expelled later (or else dies and has to be taken later).

If the doctors got a heartbeat, though, then that obviously means the fetus is still alive.

There are babies born to mothers who have used drugs that are mostly ok, although they often have things like learning disabilities; and then there are those who are killed or seriously damaged. Chances are, your friend will know more over the next four weeks as to whether she damaged her baby too seriously for it to have survived.

This is why when young women of childbearing years should stay away from drugs.

There is a good chance that her poor choices in the beginning of her pregnancy harmed the baby. From what I've read, they determine the due date by the size of the baby, so if they continue to think she's 8 weeks pregnant, that could indicate that the baby isn't growing appropriately.
She needs to make sure that she is receiving proper prenatal care, and allow the doctors to help her as best they can.

The ultrasound goes by the size of the baby it may be a small baby....It is normal to loose wait in the first 3 months.....I can't really say about the drugs....I was on cocaine when I found out that I was 3 months preg. with my 1st one .... She is 6 now and she is fine.... I smoked the whole time and not cigs if ya know what I mean...The baby is prob. fine.

Okay, she needs to leave that bad stuff alone, and did you go with her to the doctor? Maybe she wasn't sober when she went, because there's no way a doctor is gonna tell you that you're 8 mos two different times especially if it is the same doctor. and she needs to be leaving that stuff alone because if she goes to full term and she's doing all that bad stuff, they will take your baby away from you. a blood test can tell everything that you're doing so she needs to just stop before she damages that baby permanently or has a miscarriage.

The doctors are most likely predicting how far along your friend is based on the size of her baby on the ultrasound. The drug and alcohol use could have an effect on the baby, so she should tell her ob/gyn so they can keep an eye on the baby's growth, etc.

I'm not sure you want to be the one to tell her that no growth in three weeks with a history as messed up as hers is can be a very bad sign. Wait it out, and be there for her when she needs you.

More likely that the doctors are right. But since you didn't say what the doctor said than we don't know what that "something" is .
