I wish there was an organization that was so concerned about the ethical treatment of people.

PETA has a good intention. Even if you like to eat meat, love your fur coat, and wear leather... you've got to admit that PETA has good intentions. Even if you disagree with what they're saying.
However... some members of PETA (under the "PETA flag") have taken to extreme measures. The people that chose to use violence., for example, ruin it for the others.
And, yes, PETA has officially released advertising and other materials that have been greatly offensive to many. PETA's defense is two-fold: free speech and the fact that "abuse" of animals is offensive to them.
As offended as I am with some of the official PETA ads I've seen, I do agree that my actions offend them.
So... if you feel strongly about the ethical treatment of animals, including a total ban on killing animals for food, clothing, shelter... then PETA may be an organization for you. However, there are lesser known organizations (and even more individuals) that hold the same strong beliefs, but would never resort of "terrorism." And would immediately distance themselves from such extreme action. PETA does not often distance themselves from extreme activity. Which is why they have such a bad name.

I agree, to a point, with GarthBrooksFan...it is a noble cause, done in an incorrect and showboat type fashion. They use scare tactics, the film footage is hardly ever real, etc.
If you are interested in preserving wildlife, there are several real organizations I would recommend, being a member of all. They use legislation and public pressure via petitions and the like to make real changes.
National Wildlife Federation: http://www.nwf.org/
World Wildlife Federation: http://www.wwf.org/
Defenders of Wildlife: http://defenders.org/ (my personal favorite)

Peta has a bad reputation because most members are hypocrites.
You cannot eat meat, drive SUV's with leather seats, buy leather chairs or sofas, wear leather shoes or belts and protest the exploitation of animals with any integrity.

Go to http://www.thisistrue.com/peta.html; it is an excellent narrative about PETA.
The personal experience I have with PETA is that they were threatening and intimidating a local zoo which cares for retired circus animals. They are merely terrorists and should be treated as such.

Noble cause but poor tactics. They use fear, intimdiation and junk science to promote their agenda.
There's plenty of room for all God's creatures....right next to the mashed potatoes and gravy.....
