They grow a heavier coat in the cold weather that helps them withstand the cold temperatures. If you think about it, the animals in the woods are not really homeless. They were made to be able to survive in the winter too.

However, if you keep an animal inside most of the winter and then let them out, they will not have their winter coat and will be cold. For example, a horse owner should not put a blanket on the horse unless they want the hair to stay short. See the link.

As with one of the previous answers, they do try to find as much shelter as possible. Unfortunately, it's not always just the homeless animals that don't have shelter. Many people own dogs and cats that are outside animals and they don't provide any type of shelter for them. Usually, it doesn't take much: just a dog house, or barn, etc. They just need something they can get in to get out of the rain and cold wind. Animals have fur and can withstand temperatures a little colder than humans can. We have cats, and several years ago, we had a cat that did not get along with either of our other cats and wanted to be outside almost all the time. We live in the country, away from highways and such, and it was possible for her to do this without worrying too much about her. There was a shed she could get into, and the best bed we found for shelter for her was to use a styrofoam chest, tape the lid on, and cut a hole in one end just big enough for her to go through. We put a piece of fake fur in the bottom of the chest for bedding, and she loved it. You could put your hand in, and with the body heat she generated, it would be nice and toasty.

Sorry, I'll close my book for now.

My dog was missing for 5 days in December in Wisconsin. He says that he stayed next to buildings and out of the wind. Also by crawling under fallen trees and such he was able to make little caves and stay warm. Staying out of the wind is the main key. Animals have fur that keep them warm but it is never a good idea to leave an animal outside (no matter what the temp. ) without a shelter, fresh food and water..

It's very difficult for them to stay warm outside, especially those that have lost their way home. If you see homeless animals, please call the ASPCA or SPCA in your city.

They will pick-up the animals and take them to the ASPCA/SPCA where they will get warm shelter, water and food.

They sleep under the hood of your car or in abandon houses that may be partially boarded up.
