I love Alan Arkin and Steve Carell, but did anyone else find this movie extremely depressing?

Maybe a little bit. Mostly I found it amusing and entertaining. It was not a big, stomach-laugh kind of a film from start to finish, but the parts that were funny were REALLY funny. I thought the end cancelled out the depressing aspects of the film fairly nicely.

That said, what is wrong with a movie being sad? A good movie will hit you in your most sensitive parts, whether it be your funny bone, or your heart. I give this movie a big thumbs up for doing both!

Not depressing at all. Yeah, ALan Arkin needed to not die...but the end was totally upbeat. a family torn unites. Difuctional family presses forward to fullfil dreams, coping with problems and helping each other. I really liked it and thought it was odd, funny and a must see if you don't like main stream by the number movies. a strange fairy tale....

i thought it was one of the most fabulous movies ever seen...and the opposite of depressing. In the end the whole family came together, despite their extreme disfunction and supported the little girl. This movie is a 10

I loved it. I think the underlying message is that no matter how screwed up you are, there is good and bad in everyone and family, even though they are not perfect is very important and you should be grateful that you have one. I thought it was uplifting. Different form the typical movie formula.

No, not extremely depressing. It was kinda sad, but there was also some happiness that came out of it.

I found the Greg Kinear character annoying for most of the movie but other than that, no.

I thought it was depressing and sad..yuck, I just didn't like it. I hated it that the girl was on the stage and everyone was laughing and booing her. I hate to think of that really happening, and then the rest of the family got on stage and made fools of themselves! Wasn't good to me at all...JMHO.
