The pack n play is a great thing for traveling and the like, but personally I do not think it is the best option for use as the baby's first permanent bed. I used a bassinett even though I also had a pack n play and a regular crib. The bassinett was set up in my room just beside my bed so that when the baby woke in the night I was right there for her. It also had wheels on it making moving it to another room easy in the event that I wanted to keep her close while I was in another part of the house. But I only used it until I became more confident and aware of her needs as well as my ability as a mother in resonding to her during those first weeks. By six weeks we had transitioned her to her regular crib and she immediately began sleeping through the night. We only used the pack n play for trips and occassions where she would be unable to sleep in her bed. She always hated it and never seemed to be comfortable sleeping in it. She would cry for hours. So no I do not believe the pack n play is a good choice for a baby's first bed and yes I believe a bassinett would be a good investment.

A pack-n-play is NOT recommended for long-term sleeping, just for napping during the day. It really isn't that comfortable because the mattress folds and is not even. The bassinett also takes up less space and can be put next to the bed or can be rolled to other locations. A pack-n-play is combersome and difficult to move. A great many newborns don't like large sleeping areas like their crib or a pack-n-play and prefer the confined space in a bassinett. I have a wonderful bassinett that can also be used as a co-sleeper (attaches to your mattress and allows baby to sleep next to you.) Or I would recommend buying a co-sleeper to put next to mom's bed especially if she plans to breastfeed. My bassinettt is also not the standard smaller one, it is larger and will allow baby to sleep in it for approximately the first 6 months or until baby is pulling up or trying to get out of it.

The play pen I bought has a removable bassinet in the top of it that seems pretty comfy, at least from my own stand-point. My baby isn't born yet, but I plan on using that part time during the day so I can have her out in the livingroom with me (I don't make much noise). I do have a cradle in my room though for regular sleeping though until she graduates to her full-sized crib. The cradle I bought is a glider instead of a rocker and converts to a child's loveseat so I don't mind the expense so much.
Ask them why they opted out of a bassinet or cradle and if they just did it for financial reasons to save the expense, ask if they'd like one and make the offer to them. They might just say yes.

Most pack'n'plays also come with a bassinet to perch atop the playpen area. Some even come with changing tables. While some people prefer a crib, it is understandable that they might be too big for some houses or apartments. Pack'n'plays are about the same price as good bassinets, so it's really a personal choice and up to them.

I really liked having a bassinet with mine. It was nice to have it scooted right up next to the bed that I was in and also that it could be rolled into what ever room I was in in the house. Pack'nplays are awsome, but I wouldn't trade the bassinett for anything!!
Just my experiance with four children.

My husband and I actually bought a pack-n-play. It's a changing table, crib, and bassinet all in 1! We just don't have enough room for everything seperately. Everyone I know says not to buy a bassinet and that they are a waste of money...it seems like most babies don't like them! At least the ones I know personally.
:)
If they plan on using the pack-n-play then I would suggest offering to buy something else they might like.
Good luck!

Either one will work well for a newborn. I personally liked the bassinett because it is smaller and would roll easily from room to room. Hope this helps.

The pack n play is fine. The mattress is not super cushioned, but for an infant its not supposed to be.
With my first child we used a bassinet for 3 weeks, and with our second she's been in her crib from day one.
So I say skip the bassinet, use the $60 on diapers instead.

Bassinetts are beautiful, I personally had two, but neither of my children spent one night in either of them. They are kinda like changing tables, they sound like a good idea, but when it comes down to it, you are going to drop and change the baby on a changing pad wherever you happen to be!

I've had four kids and never had a bassinet. I think if they have a pack'n'play, that works really well. Anything more would just be another piece of furniture to find room for. If they have lots of space a bassinet is a pretty, decorative thing but if they don't have space the pack'n'play is plenty.
