Not only can they be reassigned to another company if and when a company closes down, they are often purchased by other companies if in particular the number is unique. For example, I worked ten years for a company with a number similar to this 222 1234 - not many of them around, so well worth having and easy for your customers to remember.

Of course they can. If business phone numbers were held in limbo simply because a company closed, then there would eventually be no phone numbers for use at all.

However I do know that if the company has paid to have that particular number, then the number can be held and not released for recirculation as long as the service is still paid for.

A number is usually "retired" for a period of time, but then it may be reassigned to another customer.
