I think you will find that the ruling on this has changed, it very much depends on the individual circumstances. Were you actually living here at the time of the birth? Was this your only place of residence, ie.you did not have a home in Italy that you intend to go back to. Were you on holiday here or just staying temporarily? The rules were changed to stop non-Brits coming to the UK with the intent to give birth here just to gain a UK pass-port. Also is your sons` father British or Italian ? If he is also Italian, then being born here does not make your son British, he would be Italian. If you are both Italian, think carefully before you decide to dispense with your sons right to be Italian, there is more to this than just a pass-port. If you wish to take the child out of the country he does not need a pass-port, he can be attached to your pass-port. In any case, when he is 18yrs. old he will have to make the choice which pass-port he wishes to use.
My friend was in a situation like this, only her son was born in the USA. They returned here with an American pass-port for him. Twenty years later, he returned to the USA for a holiday, and was immediately called up to serve in the army in Vietnam, where sadly he died 13 months later. So do think carefully, none of us can see the future.

If your son was born here and you are Italian He should have dual citizenship so he would be British and Italian. So yeah he would be able to get a passport.

I'm German and my daughter was born in England. we weren't sure about the passport, but then it was quite obvious that she could have one. mainly because she can't leave the country without a passport :)
Get a passport form and post the birth certificate with all the other things it'll tell you on the form.

yes you will be able to get your son a British passport if he was born he.
I'd suggest applying for dual nationality for him, my aunt lives over in Italy but she got her kids dual nationality so they could live over her later in life if they chose. they will be entitled to benefits(if they need them) it will make it easier for them to open bank accounts, get a mortgage etc
Basically, if you do this your son will be able to be entitled to everything whether he chooses to live over in Italy or Britain
personally i don't know much about this but you should go to your local citizens advice bureau
