Ferrets are from the weasel family. If they weren't domesticated, they would eat rodents, rabbits, and other small animals. Rodents tend to be more scavingers, ferrets would be carnivors if they were out in the wild. However, ferrets have been domesticated for so long that they can no longer survive in the wild.

NO! Ferrets are natural carnivores, whereas rodents are herbivores. If you look at a ferret's teeth, you can tell that they are meant for ripping flesh. Ferrets are from the animal group mustileds, and are related to skunks, weasels, pole cats, minks, and otters. They are a domestic animal, kept indoors and fed a diet which main ingredient is normally chicken.

Ferrets are domestic animals, cousins of weasels, skunks and otters. (Other relatives include minks, ermines, stoats, badgers, black-footed ferrets, polecats, and fishers.) They are not rodents; taxonomically they're in between cats and dogs, a little closer to dogs. They are friendly and make excellent pets. If you've never met one before, the easiest way to think of them is somewhere between cats and dogs in personality, but rather smaller. They can only see reasonably well, but they have excellent senses of hearing and smell. Some are cuddly, others more independent; they vary a lot, just like other pets.

Ferrets are part of the weasel family! If you're asking because you're moving into an apartment and they accept hamsters - ferrets don't apply. They are part of the exotic category. They do not, usually, fall into the same category as fish, hamsters, birds, guinea pigs and gerbils. Ferrets are usually on their own and sometimes classified with rabbits in a lease.

No!!!! Ferrets are in the weasel family. I have a male ferret and they are known to attack rodents. They are similar to cats when it comes to mice/hamsters. They make wonderful pets. There are a lot of bad misconceptions about them, but are gentle, very funny animals.

Contrary to popular belief, ferrets are not rodents, but members of the mustelid family, which also includes weasels, stoats, and martens.
