Well you friend has to have a gmail account too and when they are online, it will show a green light by their name. Then you just move your cursor by their name and it will ask mail or chat and you click on chat and a window will pop up and you start typing...Pretty easy and a great site. Good luck!

I think after you sign in mail, gmail will automatically sign you in chat ( see the left handside). If your contacts are on , you can click their name and chat with them. Or you can get google talk.
