I'm looking for a van to start work as a self employed courier, but want to buy a van that will earn me the most. For example a small combo sized van is cheaper to run but has limited space. Whereas, a transit size gives more space but is more expensive to run. But there is no point in using a transit if i don't get the kind of work that will make use of it's size. Any advice?

Check out the Dodge Sprinter.

They can't keep them on the lot.

Infinite answers are available to your question. Different people are going to suggest their favourite but you need to research your market.I run Vauxhall Vivaros (5) as they can carry 2 pallets and up to 1 ton of freight but are economical enough to do small van jobs too. Most couriers in my area (Heathrow) run Mercedes Sprinter vans. They are excellent tools, fast and reliable and can carry huge volume loads. Most courier firms have these and Combo vans as well. Therefore the Vivaro fits bang in the middle and i can compete for jobs too big for the Combo's and not enough for a sprinter.
Then again you could look at the top end of the market and get a Luton with a tail lift.Expensive to buy and run but you will get lots of work for it and you then have something to offer that is better than ordinary independent couriers plus you can do cash removals as well.I have one and it is a very good investment.Driven slowly, 55-60 they can return 25-26 mpg which is as good as a sprinter gets (if driven fast).
The bottom line is if you buy a van then you are committed for the length of the finance so get something that you will be happy spending a lot of time in and seek work suitable to your van.
Good luck.

small mini van with a trailer hitch.....if large transit job appears....you rent uhaul trailer and hook it up (or own/buy your own small trailer). if large transit jobs continue, then move up to a larger truck to ditch the trailer.

this way you start small, can expand as needed and if expansion stays, you can easily merge up to the next size.
