I disagree with the above post. A rubric is also given to students when the work is assigned. This way the students know what to expect and just how to complete the work.

I believe that a scoring guide and a rubric can be used as synonyms in many cases.

Well, sort-of.

A scoring guide is designed to help set and raise the bar of student achievement
A rubric is designed to measure each student's performance against that bar.

A rubric is used for grading work. It's after the fact. A scoring guide is used for evaluating the work. It's usually given before and during the assignment as a way for students to know the expectations.
