Blacks have done so much for this
country. And some parts of White
America do contribute to Black History
Month. You will be surprised, but some
in a commercial way. As long as they get
the word out, it is OK. Thanks.

What is an African American? I admire black people who work hard to get where they are today. Those who don't claim racisim when things don't go their way. People like Jesse Jackson DO NOT have my respect, because he thinks any slip of the tounge by a white person esp. a republican, is racisim. Those who work hard and play by the rules have all my respect.

Not what you want to hear, but here is PART of my opinion...

African Americans want respect from the rest of Americans. Just in my lifetime, the term to respectfully denote such a person have changed at least four times. What is with that?

An African American is a person who's ancestors are from Africa, but now they are US citizens. What about descendents from the Dutch and other white people from Africa? Aren't they also African Americans?

Folks, the whites are really confused by this. Then...we use "the N word" and we are terrible people. You use it all the time and that is okay. What is that all about? It is also confusing to us.

Blacks (woops, can I use that term without being a racist?) comprise around 10% of the population, but about 40% of those in prisons. I have heard some say it is because the laws and the courts are slanted against blacks. I say BS to that.

When I see people parked at the entrance to a store, instead of in the parking lot only 30 feet way, a majority of the time it is blacks. When I drive in residential neighborhoods and see cars permanently parked across the sidewalk, it is more often than not black homes.

I hear them talking in a language that is similar to English, but rather foreign sounding. Yes, the whites do that too, but to a lesser extent.

The point is that if you want respect, you need to earn it. Behavior like this earns only disrespect from me.

Do I appreciate what SOME African Americans have done? Of course. Just like I appreciate what SOME whites, Asians, Hispanics, Christians, Jews, Buddhists, atheists, etc. have done. I certainly have no appreciation, nor respect, for what others have done, no matter what their race, creed, color, national origin, sexual preference, etc, etc. etc.

African Americans are certainly no better than other Americans. In the 1960's, some tried to make us think that. Idiots and bigots like those from the "Nation of Islam," who espouse hatred against all whites want to think so. You want to be treated as equals, then act like one. Obey the laws, stop saying that all white people are the devil incarnate, speak proper English, and stop using "the N word" if you tell me that I can't use it.

One more thing...I'm tired of being punished by being held back in jobs so more blacks can get ahead. That is racial discrimination and blacks should be just as against it as whites. ALL racial discrimination is wrong, for whatever reason.

My ancestors never, ever had any black slaves. None of them even saw a black slave. They lived in poverty, for thousands of years, far from the United States. Why should I be punished for what other people's ancestors did. Enough is enough, it has been going on for too many decades.

The first time I saw it was over 40 years ago when I was told that I would not be hired for a particular job even though I was the most qualified candidate. That job had to go to a black person. Time to call that experiment over.

I do, but Black history is intertwined with American history. It would be foolish to tell the story of the founding of America without including African-Americans. If our accomplishments were included in all history books and other study subjects in school, we wouldn't need to devote a month to Black history!
The reason there's no white history month, is because everyone just assumes that when you talk history, it's going to be about white people. But it should be about all people who have a history in the United States.

To be honest i feel sad at the fact that black people are probably the least celebrated and appreciated people, whilst also being the most abused and used race. Howver there accomplishments are clear in every aspect of society, and not only in the entertainment field. i don't need to list everyting good African americans and black people generally have done as it is already so obvious. What does make so angry is Black history month, no body gives a **** about it (excuse my language), nobody probably knows what month it actually occurs in. it simply arrives and ends without any notice. this is a sad reflection of what society thinks of black people.

They have managed to become more honourable in the face of persistant hatred from whites who still believe they belong in the cotton fields or jail.
In england we have some great black footballers.
And many will go on and win medals at the olympic games when they are held in london 2012.
The world has changed a lot in 50 years.
I also think where you came from is not as important as who you are today and what you achieve.

Black history month opens the doors for all people to learn about africa;s history. Probably one of my favorite studies, next to asian history.

The only nation that held as many QUEENS in power. Africa truly celebrated the fertillaty magic of a woman. And I think that is SO awesome.

Uh, Black History month was in October last year?

Anyway, I do look up to African American athletes and musicians and authors like Toni Morrison. However, there is also many terrible things in the culture just like there are terrible things in any other peoples - like homophobia and misogyny.
