Why are politicians paid so much while others that seem to do so much more are paid little in comparison?

Because being a politician is one of the few jobs where you can set your own salary. So they pay themselves what they think they're worth.

They should try giving some of that to teachers and healthcare workers (non-doctors - docs make enough).

Politicians don't make all that much.

Anyone that had the responsibility for the number of people and the amount of money in private business would be getting millions.

Senators don't even make 250k.

The new Sec of Def complained that he was taking a big pay cut to take the job. And he was only a college president.

They vote in their own raise every year.You will see Ted Kennedy asking for a raise soon .Especially sense the DEM. have control.But politicians don't pay for health care and many other services that they are able to connive.These are just considered perks.Free meals,gasoline,phone and postal that they receive in Wash. and undoubtedly at home.
Just like Nancy Pelosi wants a $22,000.00 Per hr plane to shuttle her and her family back and forth to Cal . and probably a few side trips,but we wont mention them.
She denies the men & women in the armed forces money ,but does't mind spending on herself
Her job calls for being away from the family a lot ,but then maybe she shoulden't have taken the position..

not only do they set their own salary , but if they decide every year that they won't vote on weither or not to give themselves a raise than they automaticly get a raise for the increasing cost of living nice huh wish i could get a raise like that

Politicians don't make that much (on paper). They get their money from bribes, I mean lobbyists.

Because they are the ones who determine how much they are compensated.
