Yes, Europe likes to know which way we are leaning in the political arena. The elections affect how much we are going to do for them. Although they know that we are always going to be there for them, they want to know just how much the American people are willing to give for them. An election gives them an idea of how we are thinking. That is important to them.

It kind of depends on what type of person you are as to whether US elections are news.

For those of us involved in campaigns for Trade Justice, ending Global Poverty, Human Rights and peace, the US elections were and are important news because who is in control of the White House and Congress can have a lot of impact in these areas. For example, having a right-wing conservative means the global gag rules stays in place, resulting in funding getting cut to third world health and medical projects just because they don't vociferously condemn abortions (guess what - if you're children are dying of preventable diseases, you don't care about whether people have abortions or not). If you have a President or a Congress packed with people beholden to corporate interests, you know that they will try to sabotage efforts that would allow allow countries to make generic drugs that cost a fraction of the price of what big drug companies charge, so more people can afford them. If the Government is controlled by "free-trade" neo-cons, you know that there will be a big push to force developing countries to prematurely open their markets to big corporations, thus ruining that country's economy. If the occupant of the White House is George Bush, you know there will be an attempt to launch a war on a 3rd third-world country who can't defend itself.

However if you're a member of the apathetic section of the population, you no more care who is in the White House than who is in Number 10 Downing Street.
