It appears to me that the Others are on the island as some sort of utopian experiment. My guess is that Carl, who tried to help Sawyer, is being "re-educated" or brainwashed by the Others so that he retains his loyality to that group.

I guess it was just a punishment thing, i almost forgot about him, i'm still wondering if these actually are the Others. What about all the people walking around with no shoes and socks on including the kids with the teddy bear who were in the tail end of the plane and were taken. This show just keeps on throwing out stuff and not giving us stuff to stay satisfied. Im finding heroes much more exciting.

Look to me like they were Brainwashing like the other dude said for the loyality, or it could of been so that he would loose his mind and not love Alex, Ben's daughter....who knows this show is getting me Lost now!

What brain washing thing? There are many mysteries but I hadn't noticed that one. Unless you mean the pushing the button thing. If you were told to push a button or the world would end, what would you do?

You mean the one that comes through the screen so that we all watch it even though it's going nowhere?
