you gotta think though, that we often introduce people as friends (amigos) just the way americans do, because it would be very rude to introduce someone stating he-she is a "conocido"

I would make the difference:

amigos= friends
acquaintances= conocidos

Yes we do.
like the other dude said.. to us a friend is a friend while an acuantaince is someone you know but you're not that close to, or that you don't see often.
