My parents own an upright piano and I thought a nice gift for them would be to get the piano tuned. The thing is- the piano hasn't been tuned since I took piano lessons - so we're talking since maybe 1985 or 1986. Can a piano that hasn't been tuned in over 20 years be tuned - or does there come a point where it's beyond repair?

Also - how much would a piano tuning cost these days?

Thanks!

20 years is not that long, so tuning it should be fine. the main problem is when pianos get really old, the strings may become to fragile, so tuning has the risk of breaking the strings. In that case, you would need to replace the strings, which would be very expensive. Either way, the piano tuner will be able to let you know. Just ring them up, ask how much they charge, let them know your situation, and see what they say. I can't tell you how much it would cost, because it obviously depends on your area.

Call a piano store and ask? I had a upright piano when I was younger and loved the sound. It had more volumn than smaller pianos. A man tuned mine years ago but he is retired. When walking chords in a song, it sounds great.
