I think it's like the memories of the survivors. You know the way when you face a near death experience your life flashes before your eyes? Well, i think when that happened with the survivors who obviously didn't die, then the monster was created to deal with it. That's why when eko was talking to his brother, he got killed by the monster straight afterwards.
that's just one theory I have. Another is that the monster is a security system protecting something on the island. It could be some sort of voodoo (like what locke does), and i definetely think that it's the black smoke that rouseau talked about. And what about whenever it first appeared and grabbed Locke? Did it want to kill him. Maybe it kills people who have done something wrong in their life.
My final theory is that the monster is the life of the island. It's how the island kills off people when they lose their purpose on the island, or perhaps their death is their purpose on the island. When eko died, his stick told locke to raise his eyes and look to the north. I believe this will help Locke, Desmond, Pablo and that other girl whose name i can't remember (nicky?) find the next hatch (the flame).

I had thought for a long time that it was Nanobots, but the writers INSIST that it is not. But it has to be some kind of created being with all those pic's from Eko's Past... unless he manifested them himself. Perhaps it is simply a halucinagene. That would explain the various different kinds of things seen by the people. (Eko and his bro, Kate and the Horse, Jack and his Dad etc...) I love this show!!!

It's a bad decision to bring this onto the show, now the producers can't decide how to "get rid of it" or explain it to us.

i think first people on the island have(had) them in captivity, as they are doing some experiments on everything. so monsters i think are experiments gone wrong.........
