It depends on where you are. Some trade shows have a 1gig connection to the Internet that you can enjoy (yes, shared with the other trade show folks, but still quite fast).
If you have access to a co-location suite, you typically purchase 10meg connections, 100meg connections, or gigabit connections to the Internet.
For business access, speeds can be 45mbps (T3), or 1.544mbps (T1).
Home access is usually provided via a DSL connection (~1mbps depending on provider), or cable modem (~3-4mbps shared access).
In many cases, you may have 1mbps of access to your home, but the upstream provider may not have the bandwidth available for you to fully utilize the 1mbps continuously.
This is why you may have a 1mbps DSL link that shows download speeds that are significantly less than 1mbps. Your provider may not have enough upstream bandwidth, or you may be connecting to a slow server on the Internet (with many other users vieing for bandwidth).

Well my connection when i got to settings in my Internet software says 17 TB whatever that means..
