There is no "direction" within evolution. It is not a teleological explanation of events. Any "direction" is a man-made judgement layered onto an undirected natural process.
You could ask whether the earth is going clockwise or anti clockwise around the sun. This depends upon what you take to be the top rather than the bottom of the world. Either pole will do - and either "direction" of evolution will fit. Is humankind evolving or devolving? Whatever you decide to call it.
For creationists such as those at Answers in Genesis the decision on the direction is easy - they measure everything from "the fall" and define everything from then on to be devolving, downhill from the pre-fall perfection. This is naturally fine, no more problematic than the arbitrary choice of a building in Greenwich to be the world's prime meridian. Its "where you measure things from". It ought to be remembered though that the decision on a scale has zero effect on the reality being measured. Often on their site they say take an alteration in the genetic code and say that this is "devolution" not "evolution" without taking note that this is just a name - all it means is the change happened after the fall. All other things being equal humankind could just as well have "devolved" from apes rather than "evolved".

From every indication, humankind is devolving socially and psychologically. They are willingly choosing to do the wrong things for the wrong reasons. It's leading to emotional problems and sensless violence. Parents have no natural affections for their own children, ministers and teachers abusing and violating other people, sexual addicts have taken over and are viewed as normal. About a year ago a woman "married" a porpoise and it made the international news.
Adults are sexually abusing children, children are violent just because they can. People committ crimes against society and they get away with it and the police are discouraged at the whole thing. Law Enforcement officers that try to do their jobs according to the law are locked up. Depravity is considered decent and pornography normal. Humankind has become base to say the very least and only a few brave souls, object to it. What good is advanced technology in the hands of educated heathens? You may as well put untrained apes in charge!

Both the idiots are getting more stupid by breeding, raising, and socialising with idiots, which does themselves and the population no favours they are in a sense devolving back to fighting machines as they have no concept of proper communication. Then the more intelligent people are doing the exact opposite and forcing them selves to evolve into smarter more efficient beings.

We are evolving with every illness, exposure to radiation, pollution, every generational sharing of genes. This evolution is exceedingly slow and gradual, and the likelihood of any major shift is small. This is partially because of the control mechanism of perceived 'normality' that leads us to define what we regard as humankind.
I would not regard the term devolving as making any sense since it implies a moral or absolute value to whatever stage you are considering. The only constant in life is change.

Evolving. The world is "turning" but not the opposite way but rather tilting. The north and south poles are swithing sides and this is causing good and bad out comes. A bad outcome is that the earth's grid is no longer where it was, so the animals that migrate that used to follow this grid to get to new places are now ending up else-where. An example would be whales. They grid used to lead them to other parts of the world but is now leading them to land. That is why we are finding more and more beached whales, and no matter how many we save, they will re-align with the grid and end up beached once more. An up-side to this would be we as humans being able to "open up" new parts of our brain. They are finding we are becoming much more psychic and sensitive to the changes of earth.

As a whole, mankind is evolving.
There is more communication and deeper relationships between different people than ever in recorded history.
I guess if we carry on, putting aside eventual genetic engineering and human/machine hybridation, in a few thousand years, we will all look like a big mix of European, African, Oceanian, Asian, Oriental....
The thing is nature evolves with differences.
The human egg select the most different spermatozoid, because differences strengthen the gene pool.

When anyone raises this issue, I tend to think of chimps. I mean... thats what we we're supposed to be like once. We are 99.6% genetically the same. Think of a bunch a young male chimps all kicking up a fuss, pulling trees apart and fighting, now think of a bunch of youths doing pretty much the same thing really. I think all these things we've invented don't do us as a species much justice. Fragile skin, hardly any body hair, no natural defences like big teeth, slow, our sences aren't nearly as keen as most animals and yet we rule the earth.
Apparently we're getting taller and with more and more information being suffed into our brains, who knows how big our heads with be in as little a millenia. Maybe we'll end up looking like aliens, looking for another planet cause we've ruined our own. God only knows :)

The humankind is evolving when you think humankind is just a step for something bigger than the same humankind.
Devolving if you guess your humankind is the reference for nothing, just your regular life.Think diferent,so everthing around will turn diferent too.

Neither. Humankind is non-existent. So it has no direction. In fact there is no direction. Take one step East and you are heading West. Just like the human race!
