When I was in 5th grade I really liked Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. If you saw the movie and didn't like it, read the book because they're completely different (sad, because I wish the movie had been true to the book and not so weird). There's an other author sequel to Ella Enchanted called Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix which I liked, too. Also, I read this book called The Rain Catchers by Jean Thesman and I still reread it from time to time if I have a free day and feel like reading a book.

My daughter went through the "Series of Unfortunate Events" books and liked them. By that time I had started reading Little Women, Little Men, Jane Eyre, Tarzan, Conan and other adult books- it depends on your proficiency- which improves of course with practice. Try going online- like to Barnes and Noble and search by age- I bet a bunch would spring up to give you ideas---Have fun!
