Short Version: GREAT MUSIC.

Long Version: Younger people often see the Beatles songs as a body of work. When you do that you often miss the real reason for their popularity which I feel is the progression of their work. The songs of the early Beatles is different from their middle years which is different from their final years. You can pretty much find a Beatle song you like no matter what your age or views. To people like myself that grew up with the Beatles they are also a symbol of an era. They didn't follow trends they set them in EVERY thing they did. Never has there been a band that had so much influence in every field even with the other bands of the day. People eagerly awaited the release of a new album and would play it repeatedly because there were so many new revolutionary songs and sounds on them. Today a lot of people do the same thing but they were the first. Often imitaded, never duplicated.

Their personalities were also attractive. they were polite, neat, clever yet with attitude. They were rebelous in a comforming kind of way.

If you have ever been to their concerts or any of the individuals you would understand I think.

The Beatles are probably the most influential rock band in all of rock n'roll history (there are even college courses that look into the impact that they had on music and the world). Moreover, their music appears to be timeless because the age-less rock n' roll beat, sincere lyrics and amazing vocals.

Tough to avoid cliches like "timeless", but that what their music *is*.

They are the only band I can think of that appeal to 5 year olds & 90 year old grandparents. Plus, they still have an appeal personality-wise. A memorable charm that so few matched during their day & still few bands have now.

Part of it was their "boy-ish" charm, and their music was actually good. They had a great songwriting team (considered by many "the best") in Lennon and McCartney.

I love some of their songs, "Obla di obla dah" for example, but I preferred the Rolling Stones or the Kinks back in those days.

But it shows that music doesn't have to be really complicated to be a hit....just simple tunes with good lyrics.
