I always wear my seatbelt because the cases where people have been saved by them far outnumber the cases where people have been saved by not wearing them, BUT..
When I was a teenager, I was in an accident and had I been wearing my seatbelt, I would have been trapped in my seat when the car started on fire. Instead, the car started rolling and I was actually thrown out before the fire occurred.

The reason they made it a law to wear seatbelts is because of how much money and effort it costs the state to recover a person who was ejected from the car. Think about it, you have to have the fire department there, the police, EMTs, and then if they need an air lift to a hospital you have a helicopter as well. And of course if they can't pay the medical bills, the state or the hospital gets stuck with the cost. So it's a lot cheaper to just force people to wear their seatbelts.
Plus, if you're ejected from a car or whatnot because you weren't wearing a seatbelt, you're a lot more likely to suffer permanent injury. For instance, my mom is enough of an idiot that she only wears the lap part of the seatbelt and puts the shoulder strap under her arm. So what do you think is going to happen if someone who even has part of their seatbelt on gets in a car wreck at a moderately high speed? At least in that instance, the chest and head is going to connect with the dash and probably have enough velocity to maybe even fly into the windshield. And of course any possible cranial fracture can push bone fragments into your brain and either kill you or give you permanent brain damage.
So in short, they made that law because they don't want a bunch of turnips leeching off the state because they can't work anymore due to injuries that could have been prevented.

No. However, I survived a horrendous car wreck ONLY because I was wearing my seatbelt (I was not driving). I also almost didn't survive another car wreck because, even though I was wearing my seatbelt, the 6'4" 350lb drunk guy in the other car wasn't wearing his seatbelt. Dude went through his windshield, through my window, and crashed right into me. He surprisingly only had a concussion and some minor lacerations. I spent three weeks in the hospital.

I did in 1986. While driving a Chevy Cavalier and I was hit in the drivers side door and driven into a large metal power pole by the other vehicle. I was thrown into the passenger seat, back facing the dash. The gear shift was bent double, and the drivers side door was in the middle of the car. I had alot of injuries from that crash, but am still here today. I personally do not like wearing a seat belt and don't do it much at all.

Yes, I have survived 3 car wrecks that they say that I should have died from. But yet I'm still her writing to about it. The last time I was wearing my seat belt and was thrown out the side window and only had a small bump on my head.

I was hit from behind by a car going really fast. I flew halfway out the rear window and broke my back. I'm not paralysed, but it did suck. One thing I'll always remember is the doctor telling me that in his experience, had I been wearing my seatbelt the damage could have been alot worse. I agree, it should be up to the individual.

I agree it should be optional ! Because I am one of them I was with a friend in a 1941 Ford pickup and we had a wreck and went over a 20 foot bank and I went through the windshield and hit in a creek and bounced back in the highway and just about got run over but I lived ,The truck flipped on over and when it did It hit on a big rock and crushed the roof in on the seat if I had been buckled It would have killed me, I got my back broke and pulled about every mussel in my body and got all cut up but I got over it.

Yes...me. I had major injuries, but was told later by the doctors that if I had been belted in, I would have died from the crumpling of the car.
However, from that day on, I always wear my seatbelt.

No, and I don't think it should be optional. I'm typing this right now because I was wearing my seatbelt. Otherwise, they may still be scraping me off of that tree. Seat Belts Save Lives!
