At this point in time, most Cuba researchers believe that Fidel's brother, Raul, would take over in the event of Fidel's death. He has already assumed many of the responsibilities of government.

Of course, he is also in his 70s.

This is a very good question. Fidel's brother, who is no spring chicken himself, is currently officially in charge. No doubt there are a number of people in Cuba, in the military or who otherwise hold positions of power in some form or another, who are quietly maneuvering behind the scenes and possibly forming coalitions, to grab more power when Fidel dies.

There are also the Cuban expatriot groups, some of which are very well-funded and have backing here in the US, either overt or covert, who may figure in a power grab when Fidel is gone. Some of these expatriot groups verge on fanatic and may be prepared to do crazy things to get their homeland back.

I would like to think that the transition from Fidel's authoritarian dictatorship will be peaceful, and that it will be a move toward freedom and greater financial stability for the people of the island. But who knows-- there are so many variables. What if Fidel's death is announced as a hurricane is heading towards Cuba? What if word of Fidel's death is kept secret while military leaders in Cuba consolidate their hold on power? What if some foreign government makes overt moves to install or stabilize one group or another in power?

It's going to be an interesting time in Cuba when Fidel dies. As in the Chinese proverb/curse, "May you live in interesting times!"
