Ive tried different kinds of chew sticks but he still doesnt chew on them. He just pushes them around in his cage. Any idea how i can get him to chew on them? or any particular type of chew stick? Also, how important are the little salt wheels?

1st off, i've had 12 hamsters (2 escaped and had lil babies..tut) and none of them used their salt wheels. i put the salt blocks in, slightly dampened them when i changed the beds and put the hamster on the block so the salt got licked off their feet. 2nd of all, only 1 liked the sticks, its was a huge corn shaped thing. its not 100% essential that they chew on these shop brought sticks, try going out and finding some apple or pear trees and taking twigs off them. insure that u wash it and cannot see any diseased leaves. they're more likely to chew on these as they aren't brightly coloured like most of the other toys in the cage. my hamster at the moment is chewing on his nest, which is meant 2 rabbits really, but he seems happy enuf. its wooden n keeps his teeth dwn. just try loads of different things. and if all else fails? stale bread in the oven as it cools down from cooking dinner will go very hard n hamsters, rats, rabbits all seem to love the crunchy bread! dnt just plonk it in a toaster tho, never seems to go down as well...

I've had hamsters for over 13 years now.....And every single time I'd go out and buy them those dumb chew sticks...and out of every single hamster I've ever owned, in that 13 year span, Ive yet to ever have a hamster use those chew sticks. They just dont like them. I dont even know why they bother selling them anymore.

Those salt wheels are a nono. My sisters hamster had one and he got bloated, his feet turned blue, and he eventually died. i guess he used it too much. Id avoid them all together if I were you.

If you want your hamster to chew on stuff, give him carrots, apples, other hard food that he'll enjoy eating. Dont waste your money on chew sticks, theyre purely a gimick.

Unfortunatly chewing is organic to hamsters so there is relatively no thank you to get her to end chewing on the bars of her cage. My syrian did the comparable element and became even able to bite and push on the door and open up her cage to flee. i lastly ended up procuring her a ten gallon glass tank as a cage. She has a lot of toys and bite sticks to maintain her occupied.

the best thing to give your little hamster is small cut up branches from an apple tree , trust me he will chew on them, my son has 3 cute hamster´s & they chew like mad on them , so if some one you know has an apple tree, ask if you can have a few swiggs, Ps sorry should have said swiggs to begin with you´d never get the branche´s throw the cage , silly me

He obviously doesn't like them or want to chew them. Give him paper towel rolls to chew on or something like that. The salt or mineral wheels are just there to help supplement nutrition.

Mine used to do the same thing when I was a kid. He ate the bars of the cage instead. I think he'll be ok as long as hes chewing something to keep his teeth down.
