well, hearing "gray" is a lot different than "seeing" gray.
i think seeing it , as in hair or beard, usually adds a touch of distinction. and maybe wisdom.
i think to a large extent, public opinion of gray hair is swayed by advertising, which makes it almost seem unkempt to display gray hair or a gray beard. the fact is that many fairly young people have gray hair and the sight of it or merely hearing the term, shouldn't conjure up images of an old, ugly person. Quite the contrary many gray headed people are in their 30's, strong attractive, and vibrant, and going about their lives with their natural hair color which is gray, without heeding any of the advertisements for dying their hair.
gray usually is regarded as a somewhat drab or dull color, but it depends greatly on which shade of gray is used. The silver gray of the Oakland Raiders or Dallas Cowboys uniforms are quite eye catching and strong looking. Gray can be a pretty versatile color.

I don't know but the first thing that comes up in my mind is actually a rock and maybe also aging. Otherwies I find gray beautiful sometimes, think photography. Old styles and what used to be "ugly" and "dreary" comes back, probably just because "beautiful" have become so overrated, well I don't know. Philosphical I find it boring , but still mysterious.

When I thing of the word "Gray" ~ it brings to mind that my life is not just "black or white". Gray opens the door to red, yellow, and blue. So, in turn the word "gray" reminds me that I can and I am different, not everyone is made from the same mold...

Paint, composed of differing amounts of white and black paint. Usually a bluish tint to it.
I used to study painting, and mixing an even number of gray tones for the palette was the most difficult and most rewarding part of setting up a palette.

First thing I question is spelling...grey or gray. Next thing that popped into my head....a song lyric. James Taylor's Just Another Grey Morning. It's one of my favorite songs. Next, my Dad's eyes...they were grey. Next....grey skies. I live in Arizona so grey skies are a particular favorite.

BTW, wonderful question.

Gray always makes me think of weather. I grew up in Ohio, and I love a cool, gray windy day.
